Visage au carton ondule
(1956)
Pablo Picasso
Spain (1881-1973)
About the Artwork
Visage au carton ondulé presents a simple, almost childlike face framed by a clock-like border. Roman numerals encircle the design, suggesting the passage of time around a steady, contemplative gaze. The etched lines within the face add depth and texture to an otherwise playful form. Created in collaboration with François Victor Hugo, the piece was cast in 23-karat gold and intended to be worn close to the body. Like many of Picasso’s late designs, it combines wit with introspection, transforming a symbol of time into an intimate and personal expression.
Produced in a limited edition of twenty with two artist’s proofs per design, each medallion is signed by Picasso and marked with full assay and atelier stamps. Exhibited individually at Hedonist Gallery, this work functions both as a wearable sculpture and a statement of enduring elegance.
