About the Artwork

Created as part of Picasso’s 347 Series, this etching captures his late fascination with movement, spectacle, and classical form. A Roman chariot scene unfolds with theatrical urgency, a rider in mid-fall, a reclining nude, and a chorus of spectators frozen in time. The work reflects Picasso’s enduring interest in Greco-Roman themes, filtered through a distinctly modern lens. His gestural lines evoke both chaos and control, blurring the boundary between observation and performance. Echoes of his neoclassical period merge with the raw expressiveness of his printmaking practice. Exhibited at the British Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, this work is a vital part of Picasso’s final chapter as a printmaker. Accompanied by full documentation, including references in Bloch 1528 and Baer 1544 B b1.
